George Edward Woodberry was a noted American literary critic and poet. Born in 1855 in Beverly, Massachusetts, Woodberry graduated from Harvard University in 1877. He went on to become a professor of literature, first at the University of Nebraska, and later at Columbia University. His criticism was influential, and his books of criticism were often used as textbooks. He also wrote a number of books of poetry.
