The Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, and is considered the successor in a line of tulkus who are believed to be incarnations of Avalokiteśvara, a Bodhisattva of Compassion. The current Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama when he was only two years old. He has lived his life in exile in India since the 1950s, following the Chinese invasion of Tibet.
