Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist and political activist who was born into slavery but escaped to freedom in the North using a network of antislavery activists and safehouses known as the Underground Railroad. During the American Civil War, she served as an armed scout and spy for the federal forces. In her later years, Tubman was also a supporter of women’s suffrage.
