He wrote his first song at age seven and joined his first band at ten. During high school, he toured locally with the Bohemian Polka as their lead singer and guitar player. After high school, he joined the Air Force but was later discharged due to back problems. He later attended Baylor University but dropped out because he was succeeding in music.

Little known about Willie Nelson is that he is also a martial artist. He first started studying martial arts while he was in Nashville, where he lived for many years. He started with Kung-Fu, then went on to study Tae Kwon Do and GongKwon Yusul, a modern Korean martial arts system. He has been awarded honorary black belts in both Tae Kwon Do and GongKwon Yusul.
