Thomas Merton, though born in France, spent his early years in different parts of the world due to the nature of his parent’s profession – both being artists. Orphaned at a tender age of 16, Merton had lived an adventurous and non-conforming youth. His journey of seeking spiritual enlightenment began in his late twenties which later led him to become a Cistercian monk at Our Lady of Gethsemani monastery in Bardstown, Kentucky.
