Lao Tzu, also rendered as Laozi, was an ancient Chinese philosopher and writer. He is the reputed author of the Tao Te Ching, the founder of philosophical Taoism, and a deity in religious Taoism and traditional Chinese religions. Although a legendary figure, Lao Tzu is usually dated to around the 6th century BCE and reckoned a contemporary of Confucius, but some historians contend he actually lived during the Warring States period of the 5th or 4th century BCE.

【About the Story】

Little is known about the personal life of Lao Tzu. Various accounts claim that he was a contemporary of Confucius and that they once met and discussed rites and ceremonies. Lao Tzu was said to have grown weary of the moral decay of urban life and set out for the western frontier, leaving civilization behind. A border official reportedly asked him to put his wisdom into writing before he left, producing the Tao Te Ching.
